Tipperary selected to complete cups’ double

By

PAUL MEIN

Tipperary will be chasing a seasonal cup double when he goes after the Winter Cup at Timaru tomorrow.

Back in February, Tipperary was a fast-finishing winner of the 3200 m Timaru Cup and, as a last start winner at Addington on May 7, has the right form background to complete a notable Washdyke double here. His record at 3200 m, the distance of tomorrow's event, is hard to fault. Besides his success in the Timaru Cup. he also beat Ranui Del and Take Care over the same distance at Banks Peninsula in January. Tipperary will share the 10m mark with Dreamy Dragon, Amaze and, a mare whose form line has re-

mained rock solid throughout a busy season. Twilight Mist. Her 20 starts this season have yielded four wins and 12 placings. including five seconds, so there could be no more deserved winner tomorrow. She too has an imposing record at 3200 m. Fourth to race-rival Tipperary at Banks Peninsula in January, she beat all but Jilaire’s Chance at the distance at Addington on March 9, then finished third in two provincial cups, behind Vienna Charm and Panair at Cheviot and Lumber Jack and Kata

Hoiho at Hororata, both 3200 m. Before battling into fifth at Addington last start. Twilight Mist ran up three successive seconds, the latest to a smart filly in Take Care, beaten half a neck over a mile at Addington on April 10. Richard Brosnan has stable runner Lumber Jack third to Tipperary in the Timaru Cup earlier in the season, in the right order for a bold run. It could be a rosy day for the Timaru horseman tomorrow. With drives on Dragon’s Pride (Scancarriers

Trot) and Gliding Princess (Roydon Lodge Stakes) he could well carry off three of the Timaru features. Lumber Jack was a winner of the Hororata Cup on March 16 (3200 m and at his last two starts has run on strongly for seconds to Sir Bret at Addington on April 28 and to race-rival Tipperary at his last start, beaten by a head. The backmarkers, Now’s Your Chance and Espiritu, are an in-form duo for the second leg, the Series 10 Handicap.
