‘Holes’ exhibition of high standard

“Holes” exhibition. Sculpture and photographs by Neil Dawson, at the Robinson and Brooker Gallery until May 29. Reviewed by David Brokenshire. This exhibition of Neil Dawson’s work shows both sculpture and photography. They are separated into two galleries yet are nicely complementary. The sculpture obviously is the main interest, yet it is the photographs which illuminate his talent. The Pantheon in Rome is taken looking up into the eye of the dome with the great coffered ceiling curving upwards. A shaft of light cuts across to highlight the top of the entablature. This brilliant photograph immediately refers to the sculpture,

where both light and the shadows cast form an integral part of the whole. The sculptures are imaginatively hung and lit on the spacious walls of the main gallery. Each can be viewed without visual interference from adjacent pieces. There is a taut relation between solid and void and the cast shadows. The workmanship is of the highest quality and the scale ‘is small enough for the eye to comfortably encompass the complete work. The theme of “holes” is imaginatively explored. This first exhibition marks a splendid entrance for this hew . gallery on the Christchurch art world and it sets'a very high standard of. content and presentation.
