Irrigation spending $18.4M
PA Wellington The Government spent $18.4 million on irrigation in the last financial year, the Minister of Works and Development (Mr Quigley) has said. The figure included both on and off farm works and head works. The rate of return varied between eight and 25 per cent scheme to scheme, Mr Quigley said, in answer to a question by Mr lan McLean (Nat., Tarawera). Mr M. A. Connelly (Lab., Yaldhurst) asked if the Government would reduce the high rate of return required to a lower rate which offered a good return in the long term.
Mr Quigley said that the internal rate of return was not a limiting factor on expansion of irrigation projects. “However, the matter which the member has raised has been reviewed and will be subject to an announcement in due course." Mr Quigley said.
