Red carpet welcome for Sultan
NZPA-Reuter Cairo Sultan Qaboos ibn Said of Oman and the Egyptian President (Mr Hosni Mubarak) are discussing the Iran-Iraq war and steps to return Egypt to the Arab fold.
The Sultan, the first Arab leader to visit Egypt since the Israeli pull-out from the Sinai Peninsula last month, is in Egypt on a four-day official visit.
Egypt laid out a full State welcome for the Sultan. His visit is widely hailed in Cairo as heralding an Egyptian return to the Arab fold. Guns crashed out a ceremonial salute as Mr Mubarak and .leading Cabinet Ministers greeted Sultan Qaboos.
Speaking at a banquet, Sultan Qaboos urged Arab leaders to forget the past and resume relations with Egypt to restore Arab solidarity. All Arab countries but Sudan, Somalia and Oman severed relations with Egypt four years ago because of its peace treaty with Israel. Mr Mubarak said in an interview with an Omani journalist' that Egypt was prepared to restore relations with the rest of the Arab world in their own good time.
He said that the Arabs had failed to restore their occupied territory through wars, and he could not understand why Syria refused to negotiate with Israel to get back the annexed Golan Heights. Both leaders called for an immediate end to the IraqIran war, and Mr Mubarak said that Egypt would not accept any action that might undermine the security of the Gulf States.
. On the Palestinian problem, Mr Mubarak said that the “liberation” of Sinai gave Egypt more flexibility to increase, its efforts to restore the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
Criticising Israel’s policy on the occupied West Bank and in the Gaza Strip, he said that Palestinian participation in the peace process required an end to acts of oppression, violence, provocation and extremism.
“The building of Israeli settlements in occupied Arab territory must also be stopped, so that peaceful coexistence between the Palestinian and Israeli peoples replaces bloodshed and destruction,” he said.
