General forecast: The westerly flow over the Tasman Sea is spreading slowly north and should bring showers to the west of the North Island today. However, in the east from Gisborne to Otago it should be fine and mild; considerable high cloud likely. North-west gales are expected about Cook Strait and strong northwesterlies are likely over the southern half of the North Island and as far south as Canterbury. On the West Coast widespread showers are expected. eastern foothills; mainly fine elsewhere apart from high cloud. Marlborough: North-wester-lies gale force about Cook Strait today; variable skies with showers developing in the morning. Nelson: North-west winds, fresh and gusty at times with showers occasionally spreading off the western ranges; mild. Buller: North-westerlies increasing with frequent showers; cool.
