Canterbury’s turn for S.I. title?
Success has eluded Canterbury golfers in the South Island boys’ championship in recent years, the event having been won by Otago players for the last two years and by Bruce Soulsby (Southland) in 1978 and 1979. The position might be rectified this week with the talented David O’Keefe and Mark Elley at the head of the Canterbury Challenge for the title'at the Harewood old course. Seventy-seven entries have been received for the event, which starts on Tuesday with two rounds of stroke play. The top 16 qualifiers begin the match-play eliminations on Wednesday morning. Elley, a member of Avon-
dale, has the lowest handicap of three; on four are O’Keefe, Elliot Boult (Blenheim) and Phillip McDonald from Queen’s Park, Invercargill. The five handicappers are Glen Brinsdon (Gore), Stuart Thompson, who won the 1980 Hokitika club’s junior championship, and Darren Evans, who will have the advantage of playing on his home course. O’Keefe was a member of the Canterbury junior team which won the South Island under-21 teams’ championship in March. The Russley player was equal third qualifier for the Canterbury match-play championship last month but was beaten in the first round at the eighteenth by Joe Gantley.
