Dog control
Sir,—The legislation at present being studied by Parliament on tighter dog control may give more power to local bodies, but it certainly will not eradicate the mass abandonment of dogs at holiday periods by those who should never have owned a dog in the first place. Registration of dog
owners instead of the animals with compulsory spaying of bitches unless specifically required for breeding would be more constructive. This would 4 eliminate the 8 per cent yearly increase in the dog population and make dog ownership a responsibility. The voluntary groups who at present spend time and money finding homes for the abandoned could be utilised as voluntary dog con- ' trol officers. This could help eliminate the amount of money at present being spent on dog control in Christchurch alone, $400,000 yearly. — Yours, etc., J. SHARP. May 9, 1982.
