South Ward election
Sir,—Congratulations to Richard Bach on his splendid achievement in the South Ward by-election. Mr James may be the new councillor, but it is Mr Bach who stimulated interest in the welfare of south Christchurch after decades of neglect. I have lived in the district all my life and have never previously had a Labour Party representative call on me. This election was different. The Labour hierarchy clearly smelled defeat, as this time voters were bombarded with canvassers, literature, phone calls, several follow-up calls on polling day and even personally signed letters in a frenzy of activity totally unprecedented in any previous election, either local body or Parliamentary. It is to be hoped that now that the Labour Party has been shaken from its lethargy, its elected representatives, both local and Parliamentary, will display the same interest and vigour in working for constituents as has been evidenced in this byelection—Yours, etc., ' A. M. SIMSON. . . May 8, 1982.
