Human rights

Sir,—ln July, 1963, about a dozen people were arrested near Johannesburg. Ten of them were charged in October of that year with plotting the violent overthrow of the South Africa Government with the help of armed intervention from outside. This resulted in the so-called Rivonia trial. Amnesty International was in the forefront of several organisations, including communist organisations, which took up the cudgels on behalf of the conspirators who were advocates of violence. Blandly and without further question, Amnesty International, which professes to be independent of any political faction or ideology, prescribed a system to replace apartheid in South Africa, a system which has succeeded nowhere else in Africa. Do they also prescribe to the communist countries of the world? Did they ever say that while Idi Amin was dictator of Uganda that there was no question of human rights in that unfortunate country? Of course not. — Yours, etc., KENNETH R. GRAY, Director, Society of Patriots. May 7, 1982.
