Exciting league win
The lead changed hands three times m the. last .11 mintues before Eastern-Hertz beat Linwood. 18-17; in a thoroughly entertaining N.Z.I.G. premiership rugby league match at the Show Grounds last evening. Linwood . appeared to have matters well under control when, largely because of a personal scoring spree by Lewis Hudson — the “man of the match" — it nudged ahead to 14-11 as the match progressed towards its closing stages. But Eastern suddenly grasped the initiative when its secondrow forward, Wayne Jeffs, made an irresistible surge to the Linwood try-line. Kevin Placid's conversion had Eastern in front. 16-14.
Its advantage was to be shortlived. though, for Hudson was soon to kick his fifth goal and then seemingly make the result sate for his side, at 17-16. with a high and handsome field goal from 35 metres. Ironically.' Placid, who had generally had a wretched night with his'kicking, was to have the final say. He was accurate with a simple, if nerve-racking penalty. two minutes before the end. Linwood had time only for one last combined charge upfield before the full-time whistle brought relief for Eastern.
The curtain-raiser also provided a dominant individual. Rov
Ah Kuoi. in his first premier season with Papanui. alternated at centre and full-back with such success that he finished with 16 points in his team's 22-5 win over Halswell. Once Papanui had resisted Harwell's initial onslaught, it was seldom at risk of being fullv extended. Ah Kuoi. who was named the “man of the match." positioned himself well for his two tries, to which he added five goals, and the Papanui hooker. Colin Archer, became increasingly dominant in the scrums. The two premiership points obtained by Papanui have taken it to the top of the competition table, although Hornbv will have the chance to join it when it plays Addington on Saturdav.
