Heathcote explosion
A power failure left hundreds of consumers in the Heathcote Valley and Lyttelton in the dark for more than an hour last evening, from 5.42 p.m. to 7.5 p.m. Ki' \ jAbout the same time, firemen were sent to investigate air explosion at the Canterbury New Zealand Malting Company plant at Heathcote. whether the explosion and the power failure were linked. • A Fire Service spokesman said that the explosion was :thought to have been caused by a spontaneous combustion of dust — not an uncommon occurrence in such plants. The building had not caught fire, and firemen had had "nothing to see and nothing to au." The spokesman said that the explosion and .the power cut could possibly have been linked.
The Heathcote County Council’s electrical engineer. Mr I. R. Densem. said he did not think .’.that the power failure had been caused by the explosion, but that the fault lay with the Electricity Division’s supply. A spokesman for the Electricity Division said that the Heathcote County Council should be approached about the power failure.
Mr M. J. Hart, of the Canterbury New Zealand Malting Company, said that he did not know of any explosion at the.plant.
