Tie in drivers’ championship
A tie between Tony Herlihy, of Auckland, and Peter Caldow. of Melbourne, brought the first Australasian Junior Drivers’ Championship to a fitting end at Moonee Valley on Saturday night. Caldow led Herlihy by two points before the final two events on Saturday night. The first event was won by the Adelaide driver. Bret Webster from the New Zealanders, Jim Curtin and Herlihy. Herlihy’s strongly fancied runner in the final event was scratched and his replacement driver was a horse which had recorded only two placings from 18 earlier starts this season. Caldow had to finish fourth or better to be the outright' winner, but he could manage only fifth, with Herlihy, as
expected, "down the track." Herlihy and Caldow finished clear of Jim Curtin and Clinton Welsh, of Melbourne, each with 11 points. There was another tie for third, David . Aiken and Bret Webster finishing with 10 points, followed by Neville Webberley, of Hobart, on nine, and the other New Zealander, Robin Swain, and Geoff Marriott, of Perth, on six. Swain and Webster both gained experience of judicial control in Melbourne. Inquiries into incidents at Ballarat on Friday evening were completed on Saturday. Swain was reprimanded for the manner in which he pushed off the rails at the straight . entrance, while Webster was suspended for a fortnight for causing interference a little later in the same event.
