Big score to Aranui
Aranui. last year's Canterbury basketball champion, showed it was out to keep the title on Saturday when it scored more than 100 points in defeating Mathews-Mairehau in the second round of the Cooper-Henderson men’s Basketball competition. Aranui won. 110-70, in a match that was played at a break-neck pace throughout. Timaru High School Old Bovs were brought back to earth after earlier defeating Continental Caterers-Rangiora. when they were pushed close by Admiral Lodge-Checkers before winning 59-50. A mid-game surge by Vistal-ite-High School Boys was enough to upset the confidence of Butler Auto Spares-Y.M.C.A.. and to let them win 63-54. In the final game of the day the Canterbury Countrywide Basketball League side had little difficulty in defeating Rangiora. 68-54. Collins Real Estate-Universitv had the bye. > ARANI'I 110 (J. Rademakers 30. K. Ritsma 21, A. Bennett 18. B. Knops 16. P. Hill 13. A. Atchison 10. D. Moir 2). MATHEWS-MAIREHAU 70 (P. l.ee 14. S. Paterson. M. Seaward and M. Weir 10. B Fifield and P. Kearney 8, M. Hall 6. B. Hall 4). Both Aranui and Mairehau excell at the fast break, so it was no surprise that both sides looked to employ this tactic at every opportunity. The national representative Andy Bennett was in fine shooting form, but it was his fellow national player Dutchie Rademakers who was Aranui’s often-sive-play star. Ratieinakers with his softtouch shooting from outside the keyhole and superb ball control near the hoop, top scored with 30 points in his first club game. Phil Hill was tigerish when pursuing the ball on defence and Kerry Ritsma had a good game around the boards, scoring 21 points.
VISTALITE-HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS 63 (J. Whelan 18. H. Thomson 15. D. Barry 14, C. Cowie 8. K. Currie 5. M. Searle 3). BUTLER AUTO SPARESY.M.C.A. 54 (C. Dobbs 16. C. Green 14/ T. Neumann 11. J. Bosch 8. I. Webb and W. Duggan 2. P. Cook 1). Y.M.C.A.. picked in some quarters as the team most likely to cause upsets this season, could well be disappointed with itself for losing' to Old Boys. After a blistering start in which Old Boys were in foul trouble and Y.M.C.A. was domi-' nating both phases of play, the side's defence slipped late in the first spell and Old Boys took advantage of this to catch up. • Old Boys pressed home their advantage early in the second half and managed to hang on to win by nine points. Dennis Barry and John Whelan were the main architects of Y.M.C.A s demise. In the second half Hugh Thomson chipped in with some fine baskets after taking the ball to the basket and the hapless Y.M.C.A. side seemed to lose some of its spirit. For Y.M.C.A. Chris Dobbs shot well in the first half, scoring 14 of his 16 points, but seemed to lapse, as did his side, as the match wore on. John Bosch and lan Webb rebounded well, and Chris Green was a consistent scorer throughout the second half when his team-mate's scoring was flagging. TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOVS 59 (G. Austin 17. G. Hall Hl. T. Ward and D. Burtenshaw 8. P. Filia 6. T. Ormond 4. J. Dore 2) ADMIRAL LODGE-CHECK-ERS 50 il 1 . Daigneault 13. J. Edwards and M. Eder 8. B. Daniel 6. B. Ashworth and J. Piket 4. B. Challis 3. 1. Watson and P. McGrath 2).
Timaru. after upsetting Rangiora in the first round, was brought back to earth by Check-
era. which showed that it had learnt from its rather disastrous match. Timaru. through the services of Glenn Austin near the boards and Tom Ormond at guard, managed to keep a grip on the match in spite of being rattled by Checkers. The southerners' play im- .7 proved through the game-and _<■ any defensive mistakes bv ’-. Checkers were punished by Timaru. ’ CANTERBURY COUNTRY- j WIDE BASKETBALL LEAGUE r SIDE 64 (D. Usmar and A. - ’ Bennett 13. G. Gordon 12. J Wright 10. B. Hall 6. C. Dobbs 4. - P. Daigneault. J. Bosch and C. Green 2) CONTINENTAL “ CATERERS-RANGIORA 32 (S. . Nukti 14. S. Clark 8. S. O'Connor 5. P. Hobbs and J. Hill 4. J. ' London 3. M. Clausen 2). Although this match result did not count toward the basketball », championship, both sides played strongly. The Canterbury side has emerged as a strong team around the boards and the shooting , ability of its guards bodes well for the countrywide league. For Rangiora, Steve Nuku showed he was a guard who improves each game, and Steve Clark played well in the forward ’ line.
