Consular help for fans
NZFA stuff correspondent London A New Zealand consular official will be stationed in Malaga in June to provide assistance for New Zealanders who will go to Spain to watch the New Zealand team play in the World Cup soccer final. New Zealand does not have a diplomatic or consular mission in Spain and the appointment of the official, who has yet to be named, has been thought to be necessary because British and Australian consular officials are likely to be fully occupied with their own nationals during the World Cup. The New Zealand official will be able to be approached through the British Consulate in Malaga. The potential dangers for World Cup spectators in Spain have been outlined in “Practical Guidelines for Soccer Fans." which has been produced by the football associations of England. Scotland, and Northern Ireland, in conjunction with the British Government. The section of "Don't Do's" lays heavy emphasis on the likelihood of a spell in jail for bleaches of the law. It
warns that any damage to people or property means jail until claims and fines are settled and that in the event of arrest, there will- be a long period in jail before being tried.
