Nomads United’s rule ends
The 2)-match unbeaten run of Nomads United came to a surprising end when it was beaten 2-1 by Cashmere Wanderers in the Hertz regional soccer league match on Saturday.
The win gives Cashmere a joint three-point lead in the competition after five rounds with Hangers. Hangers beat its national league rivals of last year. Woolstun. W.M.C., 1-0. in the other feature match. Mark Smith, the Cashmere striker who has now scored seven goals from five games, put his side ahead in the seventeenth minute against Nomads and then continued to prove a threat up front.
Paul Jarman made it 2-0 before half-time after homing in as Nomads' keeper. Paul Pitt, left his hne. while Erich Reiser pulled one back for Nomads in the eighty-fifth minute.
The match had a sour end for Cashmere’s Brent Wallace, who was sent off by the referee. Mr Arthur Edwards.
Malcolm Parker made a great comeback from a hamstring injury to score soon after being substituted for Hangers in the second half.
It was enough to decide what was a light match, wmeh Wools-
ton had dominated in the early stages. The goal-keeper. Peter Hawker, made some smart saves for Rangers. Western stepped up to third place in the league with a wellearned 3-1 win against Shamrock. Barry O'Neil, who scored two goals, put Western ahead in *■ the thirty-fifth minute when he : headed home a cross from Phi) i Ayres. Shamrock's Duncan Dean equalised 10 minutes inlo me second half but Ayres put ms team in front again in me .seventieth minute after latching on to a through pass from a throw-in. Five minutes later O'Neil sealed Shamrock's fate with another header.
In the remaining matches. New Brighton beat Burndale. 3-0, Haiswell beat Technical. 3-1, and Christchurch United beat South Canterbury. 2-0. .
Simon Millichip and Scott Williams were the goal-scorers for United in Timarti. where South Canterbury failed to take chances to draw level in the second half. Technical led 1-0 at half-time in its match after a goal by Simon Myers, but Haiswell found its rhvtliin in the second spell with bean Barr, Wavne Burtt
and Paul Welford scoring. Burtt's goal was an outstanding solo effort. Keith Bullion. Peter Cook and Steve Wilson found the back of the net for New Brighton in what was a scrappy match at Burnside Park.
