Surprise portrait of Princess
A near full-size portrait of the Princess of Wales in her wedding gown, commissioned by Prince Charles, was unveiled in London yesterday.
the work, by a littleknown artist, Susan Ryder, is part of the Royal Society of Protrait Painters’ annual exhibition. The “Standard” diarist described the painting’s style as “not so much chocolate box as Barbara Cartland book jacket.”
He said it was accomplished in one week in December at Buckingham Palace. The Princess could spare the time for only four one-hour sittings. For the rest Miss Ryder, aged 38, was left to work alone from memory.
Miss Ryder was quoted as saying she had no idea why she was chosen for the job, although she thought she was recommended by a person she would not name.
“I was very surprised, as I’ve never painted anybody famous before.” she said.
