Call to save Games
PA ; Wellington The Labour Party has called on the Government for a last-minute attempt to “save, the Commonwealth Games.” '
Labour’s spokesman on sport, Mr E, E. Isbey (Grey Lynn), said, “Nigeria’s High Commissioner to New Zealand. Mr Edward Sanu. has clearly come here with good will.
"A stronger affirmation of New Zealand’s opposition to apartheid, or a pledge of genuine support for the Gleneagles Agreement, may well ensure the participation of our athletes in the Commonwealth Games.”
Mr Isbey said that the Prime.. Minister (Mr Mul-
doon) continued "to fudge the issue.”
“No amount of oufuscation can disguise the fact that this Government was elected, six years ago, on the promise that it would ‘make the Springboks welcome’,” he said. ...
'"The Prime Minister has said that the Springbok tour was a disaster.
“Let him state categorically that this is one disaster which will not be repeated. Let him confirm the Gleneagles Agreement. Let him declare, to the Nigerian High Commissioner, that further tours by South African sports teams will not be permitted.'
