Soccer loss for Cashmere Wanderers
Rangers overcame a tentative beginning to beat Cashmere Wanderers, 3-1, in the feature Hertz southern league match at English Park on Saturday. It was the first defeat that Nick Gatonyi’s Cashmere line-up has had this season, and it allowed their more experienced opponents to draw level with the competition leaders on points. In the other league matches, Woolston W.M.C. drew, O-O, with South Canterbury and New Brighton drew, 1-1, with Western. Rangers, without the injured player-coach, John Souter, marshalling the defence, gave Cashmere plenty of room in the early stages and it was not surprising that Cashmere went ahead after 13 minutes. The striker, Mark Smith, scored after a quick-thinking one-two passing manoeuvre near the by-line that gave him space in front of the net to hammer a left-footer. It was Smith’s sixth goal from
four matches, making him the top-scorer so far in the league. After an evenly-balanced midfield tussle in the next 20 minute spell Rangers began to exert a little more control near the break. Steve Welford almost knocked in a Gordon Faichnie- cross and Jeff Blackburn hit the crossbar with a header before Faichnie scored the equaliser after a free kick in the fortieth minute. In the second half Cashmere was forced to keep back-pedalling and apart from chances in the twentythird and twenty-fifth minutes never recaptured its rhythm. Rangers next goal was driven in by Steve Walford, who gladly latched on to a cross from Gerard Kemp which went right across the goalmouth before reaching him. Welford scored his second goal shortly before the final whistle to put the issue beyond doubt. At Queen Elizabeth n
Park, Woolston was surprisingly held to a draw by South Canterbury. The match was marred by two players from the home side, the playercoach. Kevin Mulgrew, and Mike Millward, being sent off. In the remaining Hertz match, the goal-scorers were Keith Bullion (New Brighton) and Mike Hogan (Western). Chatham Cup In the first preliminary round of the Adidas Chatham Cup, Shamrock had an upset 2-3 loss to its Hertz league colleagues, Technical. Shamrock was well below full strength with four regular players injured and two suspended and" the finishing
of Technical’s Graeme Ford sealed its fate. Ford scored all three of his side’s goals, bring his tally for the season to five. His first goal put Technical ahead a minute before half-time, with the others coming from breakaways in the sixtieth and sixty-ninth minutes. Ron Bitschkat scored after Technical’s third goal and Tony Steer made it 3-2 with a long drive in the seventvseventh minute. The other main Cup game saw Halswell eliminate Burndale, 1-0. after Phil Hayward netted three minutes from the end. Both sides struggled to find form in what was a dull match.
