Rowing crews named
Canterbury’s rowing selectors have named their first provincial representative crews for 10 years in order to contest a relay event during the opening of Lake Ruataniwha, near Twizel, on April 24. Four clubs, including Timaru, are represented in the four crews. For the provincial eight there was a maximum representation of 50 per cent per club and Avon reached its quota with two New Zealand trialists, Steve Donaldson and Mark
Meates, among those in the big boat. The Canterbury provincial coxed pair of George Keys and Les O’Connell will have a dual role at the 16-event' regatta. They will also be rowing in the New Zealand elite eight which will be racing, at the new international course a month before it begins intensive training at Lake Karapiro for the world championships. The crews named for the inter-provincial relay by the
Canterbury selectors (Messrs John Wylie, Trevor Le Bas, arid Des Borgfledt) are:— Eight Steve Donaldson (stroke), Mark Meates, Lindsay Irvine, Simon Aplin, Richard Cretney.
