Zephyr Bay colt brings $270,000 at sale

NZPA Sydney The trainer, “Bart" Cummings, injected life into the I third and final day of the Sydney Easter Yearling Sales last Thursday when he bought two yearlings for more than $200,000 each. He paid $270,000 for a colt by the Australian sprinter, Zephyr Bay, which now stands at stud in New Zealand, and $250,000 for a Biscay colt related to the Adelaide Cup winner, Panamint. The Zephyr Bay colt, out of the English mare, Slanting. was bom in New Zealand and sold by New Zealander Don Dick. It was Mr Dick’s first venture at the Sydney Sales. He sold four lots for $450,000' at an average' of $112,500. which was one of the best efforts by a breeder at the sales. The Zephyr Bay colt is related to the Epsom Oaks winner, Never Too Late 11, which is the dam of the top Australian stallion, Without Fear. “I have been looking at him for two weeks and have bought him on spec," Cummings said. It was Cummings’s sixth buy at the sales and brought his total outlay to $837,000. Cummings said that the Biscay colt, which was out of a French-bred mare, Segal,

had an outstanding pedigree. “His conformation was equal to anything at the sale,” Cummings said. Tommy Smith, who bought twelve yearlings for $932,000 on the first night and none at the second session on Wednesday, outlayed $262,000 in six purchases- on Thursday night. He paid $70,000 for a Bletchingly colt related to the top two-year-old, Allez Show, and $65,000 for a Kaoru Star filly from the Irish mare Silver Steel. Smith, bought a brother to the A.J.C. Doncaster winner, Lawman, under unusual circumstances. He jumped from behind a huge fig tree in the sale yards and claimed the Boucher colt after $34,000 had been bid. The last bidder told the auctioneer he had been waving his arm in the air but had not been bidding. Smith jumped out and said: “I’ll take him.” And the colt was his. “I couldn’t believe it would go for that price. I thought he would bring $70,000 or more,” Smith said later. “I have had six offers to buy him already.” Smith paid $300,000 for a brother to the dual Caulfield Cup winner, Ming Dynasty, on the first night of the sales last Tuesday.
