Knights break two records
The New Brighton Powerboat Club father and son Peter Knight, sen., and Peter Knight, jun., set Australasian records at Lake Aviemore, in North Otago, on Saturday, though frustrated by far-from-ideal conditions. Peter Knight sen., did 254.02 km/h in his only run in Gone Heavy to set the 7.5litre record, with kilometre times of 13.94 s (out) and 14.38 s (back). This left him 20 km/h short of the world record — he needs to average a shade over 13.1 s for his kilometre runs — but Knight is confident he will get up to the 277 km/h he needs. “It’s the first time I’ve ever completed a kilometre run in Gone Heavy, so it wasn't a disappointing weekend at all. We know where we are now.” The choppy water conditions were against the Christchurch group, said Knight, and they waited until yesterday to have a second run. “But it was ’ rougher, still, then.” Jack Ryan did not even complete a full run in Mainland Miss. He ran bearings on the first run. Peter Knight, jun., in The Godfather, set an Australasian 6-litre record of 227.46 km/h, breaking the old mark by nearly 30 km/h. However, a fourth New Brighton club man, John Rogers, was not as successful. In his unlimited outboard, You Me 3ZB, he did 131.55 km/h, a little more than 13 km/h short of the New Zealand record. Further record attempts will be made in the AugustSeptember period, and Knight said the course will be shifted — and improved — by moving about 200 m. They can’t do much. about the chop, however.
