Wool prices improve

Strengthening demand for crossbred fleece wools at yesterday's big Christchurch wool sale of 25,000 bales lifted prices for fine crossbred fleece wool 10 per cent above those at the last sale before Easter, at Auckland on April 2. But prices at Auckland were the lowest this season and yesterday’s-market indicator of 260 c a kilogram, although 7 per cent better than Auckland, is still 12c below the high point of the season —-272 c at the last Christchurch sale on March 5.

Demand for crossbred wool yesterday was a result of the better types which come forward in the South Island compared with the North Island and what was called "home-grown demand” as buyers rushed to finish their season's orders. It does not reflect any improvement in the world economic outlook. Fine fleece wools were firm for Merino and up to 7.5 per cent dearer at the strong end compared with the Dunedin sale on March 26.
