Ski-field to open early

This week’s cold temperatures and an unusually good early snowfall will allow the Mount Hutt ski-field to open this week-end. Mr Peter Yeoman, the chairman of the Mount Hutt Company, said that the company's snow groomer had worked for two days to pack the snow down to a base of 18cm to 20cm. The lower part of the mountain would be opened this week-end. The earliest official ski-ing at Mount Hutt was in 1977, when the season opened on May 7. Last season’s opening date was May 25. Whether the field can remain open will be decided on late next week, during which another snow fall, and no north-west winds, will probably be needed. Mr Yeoman said that the Mount Hutt field was able to be used on a relatively shallow snow base because of extensive summer grooming, which left “hardly any rocks protruding.”
