Overlocking built in
A ',' domestic sewing machine with built-in overlooking capabilities is now available on the New Zealand market.
Domestic overlooking machines have been available in this country for about 12 years and perfecting a sewing and overlooking machine has been a major aim - for leading machine manufacturers. The West German manufacturer, Pfaff, has just released the Pfaff Synchrotronic 1229 on the

New Zealand market. This is the first machine to combine these two functions. This electronic model is sold through the House of Sewing in Christchurch at $1249.
Although some domestic machines feature overcasting, the Pfaff 1229 is the first machine to have a true overlocking stitch. This is made possible by a small attachment clamped to the needle to allow professional finishing of seams. As well as the strong overlooking seam stitch, the new model has an overcasting stitch which is suitable for mending and repairing all types of fabric. Everything can be sewn on the one tension except for embroidery, overlooking and buttonholes. No adjustments need to . be made if one changes from sewing a sheer material to sewing denim or even lightweight leather.
Buttonholes are sewn without turning the fabric and the stitch density can also be easily changed. Another feature is the high
piercing power. The electronic control allows the sewing of as many as 12 layers of denim even at low speed. A further feature which home sewers will appreciate is the dual-feed system. This allows the layers of fabric to feed evenly and is a great advantage on sheer material. It means matching stripes and checks is effortless.
There are five push-but-tons for the various utility stitches and these can be combined in many ways to make a range of ornamental stitches. A switch behind the feeder is used for automatic threading of the needle and for feeding the cotton through from the bobbin. Provision is also made for free embroidery, blind hem stitching and stretch stitching.
According to the House of Sewing, a comparable sewing machine together with an overlooking machine, between them able to produce the same results, would cost about $l7OO compared with $1249 for the Pfaff.
The “Pfafflock” stitch has an extra edge thread, allowing the sewing and finishing of seams in professional style.
