Snow foils bid to shift takahe

PA Invercargill An attempt to bring three pair of takahe birds out of Fiordland's Murchison Mountains was abandoned when Internal Affairs Department staff were again beaten by weather. Mr Ron Nilsson, a wildlife officer, of Dunedin, said in Te Anau that the department had planned to remove three pair of takahe from the central Murchison Mountains and resettle them on Maud Island, a predator-free island

in the Marlborough Sounds. Teams of staff had been in the Murchison Mountains for about 10 days waiting for the right conditions to move the birds. Mr Nilsson said: “We have been held up by the weather, with low cloud for five days in a row. rain, and then snow." The snow had been the last straw because it meant that some of the birds had moved to lower altitudes. The venture would have to be reap- - praised. Mr Nilsson said: “We cer- . tainly plan to move them, as it is part of the management plan for takahe. but we will have to find a time that is more suitable."
