‘lmport’s’ play brings praise

Kees Doornenbal was not the only Christchurch Mogal United player to emerge with credit from the team’s 3-2 national league win over Hamilton in Hamilton yesterday.

Doornenbal scored twice but the United coach, Terry Conley, speaking from Hamilton after his team’s win, named several forwards who had performed well and singled out the newcomer, Mark McCarrick, for special praise.

The 20-year-old English import utility had “an excellent game” at left back and helped set up Doornenbal’s match-winning goal, shortly before full-time, Mr Conley said. "There was a cross-over between Graeme Archer and McCarrick and McCarrick went to the line under pressure and crossed," he said. “It was a brilliant, deep, cross to the far post and Doornenbal was there to put it away.” ’ United won the game after going ahead 1-0 and 2-1, only to see the home side equalise with what Mr Conley saw as “silly" goals. “I thought both the (Hamilton) goals could and should have been stopped,” he said. “The second goal (a Peter Hoebergen header) should have been cut out before the cross and then after the cross, the guy should have been put under pressure, but wasn’t,” the coach said. “But, forgetting about the result, the performance was a lot better. Each time they scored we came back strongly. "In the first half against Miramar (last week), we didn’t string three passes together but in today’s game we played a lot through midfield, which is traditionally the way we play.” United’s other new import, Keith Braithwaite, “did a lot in midfield," while Doornenbal and Johan Verweij “worked very hard up front,” Mr Conley said. It had been an entertaining game played in hot conditions against a Hamilton team that worked hard. Mike Fulham was the United goalkeeper, with both substitutes, Mike Howard and Mike Poole, being used for Alan South and Brent Berry respectively.
