Two Addington wins for Southland stables
By

Southland stables produced two impressive winners in Mai Mai, in the Firestone Cavallino Three-year-old Stakes, and Stampede, in the Fendalton Stakes, at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway on Saturday. Mai Mai, a good fourth in the Great Northern Derby a week earlier, was untroubled in his race. He raced well back in the field for most of the way. but improved to follow Hobart Star when he began to improve three wide near the 700 m. Robert Cameron waited patiently with Mai Mai and pulled him outside the last 200 m. He gathered in Hobart Star with ease and came on to win by three lengths and a • half in the respectable time of 3min 24.4 s for the 2600 m. The last 800 m off the front took 59.65. Mai Mai will remain in Christchurch for the remainder of the Easter meeting,
with a $15,000 mobile 2000 m on the final day as his main mission. The comparatively inexperienced Hobart Star held second by a short length from Joy Boy. which was in the open over the last 1200 m Boulder Creek did well for fourth, but he was beaten off. ahead of Ringing Time, which did well after a slow start. Ansett had her chance, following Mai Mai up. She could not quicken in the run home and finished sixth Stampede, trained at Invercargill by Allan Deverv for Mr Andrew Sellars, did not have to record such a fast time in the race for four-year-olds. returning 3min 26.4 s for the 2600 m, with the last 800 m taking Imin 0.65. Stampede was given a splendid run one off the fence by Gavin Hampton. He raced to the front early in the run home and held out the rather unlucky Twilight
Mist by a length and a half. Stampede, too. will continue to race throughout the Easter. meeting. He is a stallion by Young Charles from Leyava. Twilight Mist received a rocky run over the final 600 m and did remarkably well to be placed. She was going strongly at the finish. Fouroux came on steadily for third a length and a half from Fouroux, with Travel King, a winner over 3200 m earlier in the night, a fine fourth, ahead of Free Turn, .which made ground. Next came Mary Tudor and the hot favourite, El Regale, which ruined his chances by pulling fiercely in the middle stages. Ashley Knight continued on his winning way in the First Graduation Stakes. He made his customary quick beginning from 10m and took the lead with 1490 m left. Smooth Charm looked likely to test him when pulled out about the 100 m, but Ashley
Knight responded in grand style for lan Cameron to win well by a length and a quarter, recording a grand trial for the $lO,OOO Welcome Stakes on Easter Saturday. Gliding Princess fought on for third not far from Smooth Charm, with Nostradamus fourth after a short gap. Luca Lad provided one of the highlights of the race when he dead-heated for fifth with Monfort after losing a big stretch of ground at the start. The favourite. Lyndon Robert, lost his driver when Formal Fella cannoned into him just after the start. Yankee Hall broke through for an overdue win in the Bryndwr Stakes. He was well back for most of the race, following Shabby Tiger up when that runner began to improve wide out near 600 m. Peter Jones did not ask Yankee Hall for an effort until well inside the final 200 m and he did slightly better than Shabby Tiger to win by a head.
