Lamb steady

The demand for New Zealand lamb was almost unchanged at all levels of trading in the United Kingdom last week, according to the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market survey. Strikes at Tilbury disrupted distribution and alternative ports had to be arranged for two vessels. Prices on the Smithfield market eased slightly with PL and PM grades of New Zealand lamb quoted at 65.5 p to 67p a lb.

The offtake on the United States imported beef market recovered slightly at the end of the week with sales of New Zealand boneless cow beef al U5102.5C to 103 c a lb c.i.f. A ban on Danish pork imports, imposed because of a foot and mouth outbreak, offered brighter prospects for New Zealand mutton exports to Japan. However, there was little interest from importers again last week at the quoted price of US62c a lb c. and f. for iMLI grade.
