Armaments

Sir. — Shame on me thinking the war with Germany finished after the war with Japan. 1 have a special and vivid memory of how I heard the war in Europe had ended. I was in Liverpool at the time; a lineman in the Royal Signals, travelling in an Army convoy, when a "most immediate" message came through saying hostilities in Europe had ceased. We all got up and shouted "The war is over." Soon there was an uproar in the town. We found the entrance to the Mersey tunnel jammed with excited cheering people. We had to turn back. One tacet of the war we did not win was not getting to Berlin before the Russians. All they determined was actuated by a harsh. Godless self-interest. The shameful Berlin Wall and the blocking of

the West Berlin road, which resulted in a costly air-lift, speaks only of deception and war-like intentions. — Yours, etc., A. DELHANTY. March 17. 1982.
