Squash tournament
The top, seed. Mark Smith (Tawa), and the third sebd, Mark Crosbie (Burnside), were most impressive in the first round of the Spalding/Conley and Blyth Open Squash tournament at the Christchurch Club last evening. However, the second seed Chris Wasley had to struggle to beat an outsider. Gary Monk, in five games. There were two close women's matches. Lee North (five) found Erin Hensley much stronger than expected. With some* firm drives Hensley led 2-0. but tired after this as’ North gained control. Mary Hunt played well to extend’ Lorraine Sutherland the full distance. The big shock of the evening was the withdrawal of the third seed Kate Carpinter with laryngitis. having won her first match. Semi-finals are this evening and the finals tomorrow afternoon.
