Pest protection work praised

PA London NZPA staff correspondent The strictness of New Zealand and Australian customs officials in keeping pests and diseases out of the two countries has been praised in a letter in “The Times.” Mr Malcolm Samuel, an ecology graduate, said he was impressed by the customs officers during a recent visit to the two countries. “They fumigate aeroplanes before passengers are allowed to disembark and fruits, vegetables, and seeds must be placed in bins for incineration," he said.

"Anything made of wood is examined for signs of wood borers, and camping gear is scrutinised for plants and soil and then fumigated. “This is a sharp contrast to the United Kingdom customs which display no interest in potential diseases or pest animals and plants." Mr Samuel said he had returned to Britain with seeds from Australian and Indonesian plants, several wood carvings from Bali, and a variety of tropical fruits. "The customs officials showed no interest in any of these things, apart from the tax payment on the carvings.” he said.
