Birnie to run in road race

The national 10,000 and 5000 metre champion, Tom Birnie (New Brighton), has entered the Bavarian 10km road race to be held at New Brighton today. Although only three days after a 10,000 metre track trial, Birnie will be favoured to win the event, organised by the New Brighton Athletic Club to raise funds for a team of 12 Canterbury

runners to compete in road races in the United States in May and June. Other leading runners among the 130 entries received by Thursday are Allan Sinclair and Alan McLaren (New Brighton) and Bruce Dellow (United). Leading women runners entered are Anna Vermuelen (Christchurch) and Michelle Hadley (New Brighton). The titleholder. Tony Good

(Olympic), who just beat New Brighton’s Don Greig last year in a time of 29mins 48s, said this week that he would not be running this year. The race, billed as a fun run and open to non-regis-tered runners as well as registered, will start at the Clocktower in Marine Parade at 9.30 a.m. Late entries will be accepted up to 9 a.m.
