Armed alert at Reefton
Members of the Greymouth police armed offenders squad surrounded a house at Reefton last evening where a man was threatening to blow himself up with gelignite. The alert came after a man telephoned the police about 5 p.m. saying that he had explosives tied to his body and was going to blow himself up. Two neighbouring houses were evacuated before the
man was persuaded to give himself up. five hours later. Army bomb-disposal experts from Christchurch defused six sticks of gelignite and a detonating device which the man had placed outside the house before surrendering. Senior-Sergeant C. J. Thomson, in charge, of the Greymouth armed offenders squad, said that the man was being held in custody and would be charged with an offence under the Arms Act.
