No plans for ferry terminal
Lyttelton’s inter-island ferry terminal, No. 2 West wharf, is likely to remain idle in the immediate future. The terminal has not been used since the Rangatira last sailed for Wellington in September, 1976. and the Lyttelton Harbour Board' has no plans for its future. Mr I. H. Brokenshire. the board’s secretary, said that the terminal's future had been discussed at board meetings last year, and it had been decided to leave it on the wharf.
It was felt that the terminal, which had been fully maintained and was in good
condition, could be •is>'<t again if an inter-islano ,ser vice were reintroduced. Other facilities at the terminal included a link-span gangway and a .car-park. “Although no inter-islarid service has been started it was felt the terminal would be useful if there was one," Mr Brokenshire said. It could also be used for a coastal passenger service. If it is decided in the future that the terminal is no longer needed, it is unlikely to be demolished. The terminal, built in 1965.
is "demountable" and can be fully reassembled if removed from the wharf.
