New 24c stamp on April 1

This new 24c stamp will be released by the Post Office on April 1 and will become the most commonly used stamp after the cost of sending a standard surface mail letter rises to 24c on that day. The stamp, depicting the map of New Zealand, was designed by Mr Allan Mitchell, of Wellington, and printed by Leigh-Marton Pty, Ltd, of Melbourne, using lithography. The time involved in designing, printing, and processing a special envelope means there will be no Post Office unaddressed first-day cover produced for the new issue.

However, the “First Day of Issue” date-stamps norm-; ally provided at chief post offices will be available for cancellation of .customers’ own copies. The basic rate for sending an internal airmail letter will also rise on April 1, from 25c to 30c, each additional 10 gram costing 6c. •
