Aust. farmers oppose C.E.R.

NZPA Brisbane Australia’s National Farmers’ Federation yesterday decided to fight the proposed agreement on closer economic relations between Australia and New Zealand. The federation’s executive director, Mr J. Whitelaw, said that, the federation would oppose the proposal to safeguard the interests of Australian farmers. Addressing the half-yearly conference of the Queensland Council of Agriculture, he said it was “not quite good enough” simply to accept assurances that the proposal

would not harm Australian farmers. Talk of New Zealand’s relaxing its import restrictions to Australian exporters over 15 years was "nonsense: they might as well not relax them at all.” Competition with Australian industries would be unfair if New Zealand continued its high support levels to its rural industries. Currency fluctuations would also tend to favour New Zealand farmers. Mr Whitelaw said, “Unless there are satisfactory solutions to these two major points, I do not believe we can accept C.E.R. policy with any equanimity.”
