Beef schedule
Sir,—Your leading article on the South Island beef schedule crisis does not emphasise the main point in the current pricing problem. It is simply that the Government is not honouring its farm price guarantee. All other issues such as over capacity of killing facilities, cost and level of S.M.P.s are separate side issues although they are real problems in themselves. I, like many other farmers, have bought cattle in 1981 and set development programmes going based on a minimum guaranteed price we will receive for the cattle this year and next. The 8c drop will cost me $7200 to June this year, with another $13,000 loss. of revenue next year. This represents a large reduction in income which we are unable to sustain. The main issue is very simple. The Government guarantee on minimum prices for the beef farmer has not been honoured. The integrity of Government and basic - principles are being strongly questioned. — Yours, etc., . j. r. McKenzie. March 17, 1982.
