Govt beef move ‘breach of faith’
Wellington reporter The Government refusal to provide the promised return for beef farmers, in the South Island is a "complete breach of faith." according to the Labour Party's spokesman on primary production. Sir Basil Arthur. “It shows that this Government speaks with two tongues, one in election ’year and another this year,” he said. Farmers had bought and fattened stock on the clear understanding that they would receive a guaranteed minimum price under the supplementary minimum prices scheme. Now, at the very time that farmers expected to get their reward for their hard work, the Government had changed the rules and effectively had pulled the rug from under the whole beef industry. This move would do more to undercut farmer confidence than any sudden adverse moves in international markets. Another distortion would be caused by this policy change. Calf sales in the South Island would be poorly attended and the prices would be very low. This in turn would spell doom for the South Island beef industry.
