Ben, Enterprise likely to go well in Auckland first leg

Special correspondent Auckland Keen interest will centre on the performances of the Derby hopefuls. Ben and Enterprise, against John Tudor and company in the Patrons Handicap at Alexandra Park this evening. The race, over 2700 m. is the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second night of the Auckland Trotting Club’sGreat Northern Derby meeting. Ben and Enterprise, both of whom performed well on the first night last Saturday are leading contenders for the $50,000 Derby. Up against such tough opposition as John Tudor. Hurricane Shannon. Lemrac and Mister Majestic tonight, the pair should give the older pacers a run for their money. Ben showed his fourth placing at Claudelands on March 6 was best forgotten when he easily won the Gloucester Park Handicap last Saturday. Starting from 10m. Ben cruised to the front at the 220 m peg and took control, clearing out by one and a half lengths at the finish. Enterprise, a southern visitor, proved he is in top form after he ran a great race for second on the first night. After being buried in on the rails three deep until well into the home straight, he powered home to be only a half length behind Peter Foyle at the finish. Although some gloss was lost from the race when Delightful Lady was with-

drawn yesterday. John Tudor. Hurricane Shannon. Lemrac and the three-year-olds are sure to provide a grand spectacle. John Tudor will be having his first race since failing in the Auckland Cup on February 12, but, from only 10m behind, he will prove a worthy opponent this time. Lemrac put up a good performance for his second last week-end after breaking at the start and Hurricane Shannon and Mister Majestic raced well enough on the opening night to ensure they will provide stiff opposition. The second leg. the Orewa Handicap, will generate almost as much interest as the patrons handicap with most of the other Derby runners lining up. Mel’s Boy and Portfolio

were both good winners last Saturday and Mai Mai and Mister Wood Chips would obviously be improved with their third placings. Portfolio's performance was outstanding. He was parked out for the final 1600 m of the second Great Northern Derby graduation heat and his victory proved he is a tough customer.
