Rangiora manager wins award

A Rangiora store manager has been named Young Retailer of the Year by the Retailers’ Federation (Inc.). Mr T. J. Freer, of Christchurch, who manages the Farmers and Haywrights branch at Rangiora was presented with the R. M. Barker Award at the New Zealand Retailers' Federation conference at Hastings on Saturday, for winning the young retailer award. The award is presented to 1a young retailer who has made an outstanding contribution to retailing based on study, determination, and ability. Recently appointed as store manager for the Farmers and Haywrights store at Rangiora, Mr Freer, aged 26. has worked in retailing since he left school in 1973.

He began working at Tisdalis Sports Centre. Christchurch, before moving to the Farmers sports department at Cashel Street. After a number of years as section head for a variety of departments, he was made hardware group sales supervisor and subsequently merchandise supervisor at the Cashel Street store. Mr Freer also spent a year travelling overseas gaining retail experience in the United Kingdom and the United States. He also attended the Distribution Industry's Training Board first national certificate of retailing course held in Christchurch and has been awarded New Zealand Institute of Management certificates. Last year, ihe federation’s award also went to a

Christchurch retailer. Miss Sally O’Brien, of Pannells Footwear. Ltd.
