'Times’ editor seeks directors meeting

NZPA London The editor of “The Times,” Harold Evans, is hoping to meet-all the national directors of Times Newspapers Holdings, Ltd, “The Times” has reported. '. The paper quoted Bernard Donoghue, an assistant editor of “The Times,” who had been in contact with Mr Evans, as saying that the editor had been in touch with some of the national directors and now hoped to meet them all.

■The six independent national directors are the men who could hold the key to the editorship struggle at the paper. The independent national . directors are a group of men, virtually the embodiment of the English Establishment, whose function is to ensure that the

editorial independence of the editor is maintained, and to approve the dismissal and appointment of editors. Yesterday they were arranging a special meeting to discuss the issue, but it was not clear when the meeting would taker-place. And there was still confusion over how — whether — the argument over the editorship could be resolved. The owner of “The Times,” Rupert Murdoch, has asked Mr Evans to resign, but the award-winning editor is reported to have denied claims that his departure has been agreed. ■ One of the. independent directors, Lord Robens, said yesterday: “We cannot move until somebody presses the button. “It really depends upon

is resigning and not appealing. or whether he is going to appeal to the national chairman. “The situation is that the management and owners .... cannot either discharge their editor or appoint a new editor without the concurrence of the national directors.” At “The Times” yesterday the deputy editor, Charles Douglas-Home, who has been invited by Mr Murdoch to replace Mr Evans, was working as duty editor. He declined to talk about the editorship issue. A journalist on the paper said: “No-one here knows what’s happening and I think everyone is getting pretty cheesed off. “It has gone on a long time and it’s not doing the paper any good.”
