Lawyers seek experience
PA ‘ Wellington The Law Society has expressed concern about the lack of practical experience law graduates have on completion of their academic qualifications. In submissions to the Statutes Revision Committee on the Law Practitioners Bill, the society said that it was satisfied the standards of academic education in New Zealand law schools were higher than ever. The society said, “gradu-
ates are therefore well equipped academically on taking their degrees but are not familiar with the actual practice of law as they will experience it on entering a law office.” The society welcomed proposed changes in legal-quali-fication provisions which would enable experience in a company or university to count for the three years legal experience required before a practitioner could practice on his own account.
