Trophies for older women
Sir,-The Big M 10,000 metres series was a great fun run on Saturday. The best runners, both men and women, were given the best chances to win by starting right up front. They could run unhindered and achieve good times. The traffic department’s co-operation was magnificent, ensuring „ safety for all competitors. The crowds encouraged even the slow ones and Japanese tourists called greetings. To be a competitor was fun, satisfying and even exciting. At the end there were rewards for those who had won. Probably, because few women over 40 and 50 enter, no trophy is offered for first, as one, for men, only for women over 35. It is presumed that women competitors over 35 are rare. If so, why not reward their courage in the future by offering a trophy the same as those for men, first over 40 and first over 50?—Yours, etc., DOROTHY KITCHINGMAN. March 13, 1982.
