‘Barney Miller’ to be cancelled
NZPA Los Angeles “Barney Miller,” A.B.C.’s long-running and highly regarded police comedy, will be cancelled after this season because of low ratings, production spokesman Bob Garon said. The show, which made its debut in 1975, returned this season only at the insistence of A.B.C. and members of the show’s cast. Danny Arnold, the executive producer and co-creator, had wanted to end the show at the end. of the 1981 season. The move by the network to cancel the series is apparently due to its faltering ratings. In the latest Nielson ratings the show was 42nd out of 69 shows. The week
before it was in 39th place. Hal Linden presided over New York’s 12th police precinct as Capt Barney Miller. The show underwent numerous cast changes, with Maxwell Gail and Ron Glass as the only other actors to remain with it throughout.
