Woman hurt in fire
Detectives are investigating three unrelated cases of arson in Christchurch at the week-end. one of which left a woman in hospital with facial burns. A fire, which may have been deliberately lit,' broke out at the back of Mrs Margaret Brokenshire's pensioner flat at 400 Pages Road. Aranui. soon after 8 p.m on Saturday. Two Fire Service engines could hot prevent the flat being badly damaged. Mrs Brokenshire. aged 62, suffered burns to the face during the blaze and was last evening reported to be in a fairly comfortable condition at Burwood Hospital. Detective-Sergeant David
Porteous said last evening that the fire was being treated as suspicious. Two smaller fires which broke out in Christchurch at the week-end are also being treated as. suspicious. One destroyed a'garage, containing tools and furniture, in Madras Street early yesterday morning and the other caused $250 damage to a doorway at the Crichton Cobbers' Youth Club, in Chester Street, about 3.30 p.m.- on Saturday. Detective Sergeant Porteous did not believe that the fires were; linked.
The police want to hear from anyone who saw anything, suspicious at the scene of the-three fires.
