Powley dies on ferry

PA Wellington The champion South Island * galloper, Powley, died yes- J terday on a Cook Strait : crossing when the afternoon ! north-south ferry Aratika 1 struck 12 metre waves blown up by southerly gales. •’ ’ The four-year-old galloper, ' returning from engagements ; at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, 1 was one to three thorough- 1 breds which reportedly had to be put down during the sailing.

Railways Corporation executives late last night confirmed the death of Powley and said they were checking on the names of the other horses. Details of the incidents which led to the deaths of the horses were not available. Blenheim police said they understood the horses had been attended by a veterinarian travelling on the ferry. Powley, a four-year-old by Noble Bijou from Mellay

Vite, was owned and trained by the veteran Wingatui trainer. Hector Anderton. The mare was returning from Trentham, where she contested the Wellington Racing Club’s DB 1600 Handicap on Saturday. She was unplaced in that race but in January scored one of her greatest wins on the same course — in the George Adams Handicap. The Invercargill-trained mare, The Dimple, was injured on the same crossing.
