Laetrile causes defects

NZPA Washington A United States Government scientist has said that oral doses of laetrile. a substance used in the treatment of cancer but considered worthless by many doctors, causes birth defects in laboratory animals.

In a report published in “Science Magazine." Dr Calvin Willhite said cyanide poison that is a natural part of laetrile caused skeletal malformations in the offspring of hamsters. The study was conducted at the United States Agriculture Department's western regional research centre at Berkeley. California. The new study was the first to indicate that laetrile, which a Government study recently concluded was of “no substantive value in the treatment of cancer," might have considerable negative side effects. Laetrile is made from the stones of apricots and. in spite of being banned in many American states, is still used by thousands of cancer sufferers.
