Brilliant Chatfield bowling in Hawke Cup match

PA Nelson Brilliant bowling by Ewen Chatfield earned Hutt Valley a first innings lead in the Cyclone Series Hawke Cup cricket challenge against Nelson in Nelson at the week-end. The New Zealand test re-

ject devastated Nelson with eight wickets for 49 runs in Nelson’s first innings total of 142. Chatfield was the difference between the two sides in the first innings, in which Hutt Valley took a 30-run lead after scoring 172.

Chatfield also batted well in Hutt’s second innings with 20 runs in- a valuable ninth wicket partnership. Nelson needs 216 to retain the Hawke Cup today on the third and final day. It was 16 for one wicket in its second innings at stumps yesterday. Hutt Valley batted first and scored 172, due largely to a stylish 62 by a youngster, Naera Parata, who got on top of the Nelson bowling. Peter Visser took four wickets for 46 in the Nelson attack. Nelson crashed to be all out for 142, its lowest score in 13 consecutive Hawke Cup defences. Its opener, John Smith, top scored with 34 and Richard Hayward and Jock Edwards were both out in the 20s after looking set for long stays at the crease.

However, none of the Nelson batsmen could counter Chatfield's unerring line and length and his movements off the seam. Hutt Valley should have set its seal on the match when it went into bat in the second innings just before lunch. But Nelson struck an early blow when the opener Ronnie Hart, was out lbw for 0 to part-time bowler, Wayne Hodgson. Hutt Valley battled through to 201 before they were dismissed about 40 minutes before stumps. Scoreboard: Hutt Valley 172 (N. Parata 62. P. Visser 4 for 46. A. Jones 2 for 18) and 201 (R. Smith 69, B. Smith 54, E. Chatfield 20 not out. W. Aberhart 3 for 26, P. Visser 3 for 55) v. Nelson 142 (J. Smith 34. E. Chatfield 8 for 49) and 16 for one wicket-
