Courting Appeal wins final
NZPA Melbourne The husband and wife team. Ralph and Kathleen Ford, combined to win Australia’s richest trotting race with Courting Appeal at Moonee Valley, Melbourne, on Saturday evening. Trained at Campbell’s Creek, near Castlemaine, in central Victoria, by Kathleen Ford and driven by her husband, Courting Appeal outsprinted her rivals to win the $30,000 Australasian Trotters Championship final. Courting Appeal was suited by the fast pace set by early leader, High Carl, and favourite, Stormy Morn. Courting Appeal won two metres from Big Jake, with three and a half metres to Port Jet, third. The New Zealand gelding, Stormy Morn, which came from the back mark of 30m to race outside the leader for the last 2000 m, finished a gallant fourth. The Fords have been a prominent trotting family in central Victoria for the past 20
years. They also won the Trotters Championship final in 1968 with another mare, Christine Maree. Ralph Ford bought Courting Appeal's dam, Douschka, for $l5OO in foal, and the result was Saturday night’s championship winner.
