Win for Gaelic Bid would be popular

By J. J. BOYLE Gaelic Bid is expected to make a well-earned breakthrough to winning form in the Ashburton County Handicap today. ■ •; The Westport-trained Sabratel gelding opened his five-year-old season promisingly with a second to The Dimple in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Jockey Club Handicap in November.

He has been unable to improve oh minor platings in a fairly light programme in the meantime, but his run for third against the sprinters at the Hororata meeting on March 6 held out promise for an early win. Timax, fourth behind Gaelic Bid at the Hororata meeting, will oppose him again in the Ashburton County Racing Club’s feature today, and will come in for solid backing for his attempt to achieve a home-track victory. Timax will probably be David Walsh’s mount in the first leg of today's T.A.B. double. If there had been any easing in the track John Peel would have run with Walsh as his rider, but the Ashburton trainer Jim Lalor could not see any prospect yesterday of suitable footing for his talented four-year-old. Frontline and Arrjon will be Lalor-trained hopefuls for the Coldstream Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. Frontline is this season’s Reefton Gold Cup winner, but he will have to find some improvement on his latest run for sixth in the Hororata Cup. Five Over Five brings stronger form to bear on today’s race after a second in the Hororata Cup, a second at Wingatui the time before, and a win over 2000 m at Riccarton on February 9.
